Session 5

A best practice that I use in my classroom last year was media clips from United Streaming. At one of our training days our Curriculum Specialists showed us the technology resources that we had available at our site. I thought United Streaming was a great way to give the students a visual of the topic they were learning about. Having a lot of English Language Learners in our school we need to find different ways of presenting the material to ensure the students have a solid understanding of the material being taught.

United Streaming is a website that has media clips on various topics that can be downloaded and shown to the class on on LCD projector. The school needs to have a licensed in order to access the bank of media clips. With United Streaming search bank you can search by subject, state standards, grade, or keywords. It is a great site to integrate technology into the core curriculum.

Everyone may not be using this best practice for different reasons. Some teachers may not know how to download and burn media to Cd's or the may not be familiar with the LCD projector so they are unable to show it to the class. Also the use of video in the classroom may not meet the needs of their students.

Activity Log:

This week I listen to the topic podcast. I am putting the finishing touches on my project 1.

    Cassandra,
I think that it is cool that you use an LCD projector. I am trying to get my principal to order one for my class. Good luck on your project

    Cassandra,

I think the integration of media clips in the classroom is an excellent way of keeping the students interest. And like you stated, especially with a lot of English Language Learners in your school, you need to find different ways of presenting the material so that it not only is easy for the students to comprehend, but also keep their interest. United Streaming sounds like it works at your school, I am curious to find out if they offer something like that at the college level?

    Hi Cassandra,
I totally agree with you that there are many individuals out there do not want to learn the technology, or they just learn enough to survive. In the past, I was one of them so I understand that in many cases they would feel that their hands are tied due to lacking of the knowledge and the “know how” about technology. If they start to pay attention to the best practice, the technology will make their job or their life much easier to live (if the technology works correctly).

    Hi Cassandra,

I like your best practice. I will check it out to see how I can use it.

One thing that jumped out at me was your willingness to try to reach as many students as possible by presenting your material in different ways, being aware that different individuals will learn the same material in diverse ways. I think this in itself is a best practice. Keep it up, it is great.

Hey Cassandra, so glad to hear someone making good use of United Streaming! :) Our school does site-wide lessons using some video clips from there and it's opened up my eyes in finding some great supplemental materials. Have you used any of the lessons or worksheets also posted on there?

    Hi Cassandra,
I love that program! We used it at my school and it had so many interesting topics. To bad the district opted not to get it this year. I wonder if that is because not too many teachers used it last year...
